Element fractionation in the solar chromosphere driven by ionization-diffusion processes
نویسنده
چکیده
An ionization-diffusion mechanism is proposed to understand the first ionization potential (FIP) fractionation as observed in the solar corona and the solar wind. The enrichment of the low-FIP elements (<10 eV) compared to the highFIP elements in a large variety of phenomena, as e.g. slow and fast wind or polar plumes, is explained. Also the special behaviour of the heavy noble gases becomes perceptive and the absolute fractionation, i.e. in relation to hydrogen, can be calculated and fits well to the measurements. Additionally the theoretical velocity-dependence of the fractionation will be used to determine the velocities of the solar wind in the chromosphere. The main achievement of this paper is the explanation of a great variety of fractionation-related phenomena on the basis of one single model.

Hydrogen and helium in the solar chromosphere: a background model for fractionation
A multi-fluid model for a hydrogen-helium mixture in an ionization-diffusion layer in the (solar) chromosphere is presented. The purpose of this model is to serve as a background for fractionation models calculating the abundance variations of minor species from the photosphere to the solar wind. The emphasis will be on the determination of the (mean) flow velocity in that ionization layer. The...

We revisit in more detail a model for element abundance fractionation in the solar chromosphere, that gives rise to the “FIP Effect” in the solar corona and wind. Elements with first ionization potential below about 10 eV, i.e. those that are predominantly ionized in the chromosphere, are enriched in the corona by a factor 3-4. We model the propagation of Alfvén waves through the chromosphere u...
متن کاملThe role of partial ionization effects in the chromosphere.
The energy for the coronal heating must be provided from the convection zone. However, the amount and the method by which this energy is transferred into the corona depend on the properties of the lower atmosphere and the corona itself. We review: (i) how the energy could be built in the lower solar atmosphere, (ii) how this energy is transferred through the solar atmosphere, and (iii) how the ...
متن کاملConvection driven heating of the solar middle chromosphere by resistive dissipation of large scale electric currents
A two dimensional, steady state, resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model with flow is used to support the proposition that a major source of heating for the solar middle chromosphere is resistive dissipation of large scale electric currents driven by a convection electric field. The currents are large scale in that their scale heights range from hundreds of kilometers in the network to thousa...

Significant fractionation of dust/gas from the original interstellar doud during the formation of the solar system is a distinct posfilbility. Identification of such an effect would provide important clues to nebular processes. Fractionation of volatiles is not constrained by CI abundances and only for the most abundant ones by photospheric observations. The solar Xe elemental abundance is dete...
